On October 17, 2010, we organized a concert, featuring the music of Pham Duy, one of the greatest songwriters of Vietnam's contemporary music. The show was a great success and the 90-year-old songwriter himself, who flew all the way to Singapore, was extraordinarily pleased with the quality of the concert.
The show took place at University Cultural Centre Theatre, inside the campus of the National University of Singapore. The tickets were overbooked and the 450-seat concert hall was filled with music and mixed emotions throughout the night. The show was divided in four sections, representing the life paths of a typical Vietnamese of the old time: "Childhood", "Love", "The Ups and Downs", and "Peaceful Fatherland".
The songs were carefully selected to fit in the section to make up a coherent flow. Most of them are the best compositions of Pham Duy that have been loved and sung over three generations and will continued to be admired and performed in the generations to come.
All of the singers were popular and active characters in the Vietnamese community of Singapore. The band was also made up of the best musicians of the community. Japanese saxophonist Sho Hayashi and Australian drummer Simon Hyett also joined the band to make the concert a great music show ever produced for the Vietnamese community in Singapore.
Most of the music was newly arranged instead of being adopted from prior arrangement versions. Moreover, some of the songs are accompanied with dancers in traditional Vietnamese costumes, making the show more colourful and remarkable.
The show could not be a reality without the generosity and support from sponsoring companies and organizations. The Platinum Sponsor of the organization is Parkway Cancer Centre.
The profit of the show, amounting to more than $4,000, was contributed to the Gentle Fund Organization, the first and only Vietnamese non-profit organization in Singapore and the people of the central Vietnam who were then suffering from the flood.
